7th Woking Scouts achieve the Chief's highest award

February 8, 2001

Only two months into the new year and 7th Woking again makes the news with two of it's Scout Troop members achieving the Chief Scout's Award.

In a presentation at their Headquarters fellow Scouts, Leaders, friends and family heard of the high degrees of determination and persistence shown by James L and Michael H to achieve it's exacting demands.

This is the first time in the last five years that a member of the troop has achieved the award, an indication of just how much is required to accomplish all 17 parts of the award.

In a moving tribute to his former archery instructor, Alan Roberts, who passed away recently, Michael told of the inspiration he had gained to pursue the sport to the highest levels (Michael is currently the Surrey County Under 16 Silver Medallist). Through his participation in the award he has learnt to pass on his skills and enthusiasm to younger members of the scout movement.

James spoke of the high levels of training he had received enabling him, as part of a 7th Woking team, to win the District and County Lightweight camping competitions in the same year - a first for 7th Woking and Woking District Scouts.

At the request of Daniel M, on behalf of the Patrol Leaders Council, Martin Fleetwood (Assistant District Commissioner, Scouts) presented James and Michael with their badges. As Daniel put it: "Although the Chief Scout’s Award is only a small badge that will be worn on their shirt for a few months it represents the highest level of achievement for Scouts."

In completing the award, James helped create a number of pages for this website. You can see how James (and 2 other Patrol Leaders) got on by clicking here.

James and Michael will both receive their certificates in a separate presentation on February 10, by the the County Commissioner, Steve Hall.
