7th Woking Scouts achieve Chief Scout's Award

July 5, 2001

For the second time this year 7th Woking Scout Troop celebrated as another two of it's Scouts were presented with their Chief Scout's Award, the highest level of achievement that a Scout can attain.

The presentation came after months of hard work by Barry F and Daniel M to complete the 17 separate challenges required by the award. Fellow Scouts, leaders, friends and family gathered at their Headquarters to hear of the high degrees of determination and persistence shown to achieve it's exacting demands.

In completing the award, Barry and Daniel helped create a number of pages for the Groups website. You can see how they got on by clicking here.

Barry described how he had spent several months helping at the weekly meetings of the Beaver Scouts where he found that encouraging the youngsters in scouting had been one of the most valuable contributions he made during the award. Barry had also been a member of the first Woking team to win the Surrey County Lightweight Camping competition, an event that had helped him learn the importance of real teamwork, a skill that scouting aims to develop in it's young people.

Daniel told of the real challenge he had found in leading the youngest ever team to complete the arduous Southern 50km race in February. He described the difficulties in maintaining team spirits when their morale seemed inversely proportional to the size of their blisters. He will now continue to use his leadership skills as a junior instructor in canoeing.

The Chief Scout's AwardAlong the road to this achievement, both Barry and Daniel accumulated a number of other awards in Scouting and in other schemes, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the British Canoe Union. Daniel commented on how he was fortunate to have been blessed with a proud mother who enjoyed sewing on all the badges!

As demanded by the award, the young people themselves hosted the evening. At the request of John H, one of the Patrol Leaders, the District Commissioner for Woking Scouts, Paul Truscott, made the presentation to Barry and Daniel.

As John put it: " Barry and Daniel may make it sound easy, but it isn't - trust me, I know. It can only be achieved after a considerable amount of training has been undertaken."

Barry & Daniel will travel to Switzerland together in August for a Scouting expedition to the Alps. In January 2003 Daniel will travel to Thailand, having recently won the opportunity to take part in the World Scout Jamboree. He will travel with 5 other Scouts from Woking to form part of the Surrey contingent. For more details on the Jamboree selection click here.
