Best results ever in Southern 50
February 16, 2002
This years 7th Woking competitors in the Southern 50/50 notched up the best results yet for the Group (photos to follow soon). The Southern 50 is a team event, raced over a 50 kilometre or 50 mile unknown route in the Chiltern Hills. To add to the challenge, each member must carry personal survival kit. The challenge tests their teamwork, stamina, commitment .... and map reading skills! Many congratulations to:
Barry F, Mike H, John H and James L (all 7th Woking Ventures Scouts) for taking the Ricky Bickley Trophy (awarded to the runners up in the Venture Scout 50km race) with a superb time of 8 hours 30 minutes. This trophy was first won by 7th Woking in 1999 - click here for details.
Frances Britain (Woking District), Steve Britain and Simon Lee (both 7th Woking) and Richard "Sooty" Sutcliffe (1st Send) for taking the Grove Trophy (awarded to the fastest team in the 50 mile race with an aggregate age of 130 years) in a rip snorting 13 hours and 28 minutes. Special thanks from the rest of the team to Simon for bumping up the aggregate!
Ian H and Dan M (both 7th Woking Scouts), Nick O (7th Woking Venture Scout) and Chris P (1st Hinchley Wood Scout) for lopping over 9 hours off last years time by completing the course in 10 hours 48 minutes.
To add to the tremendous success of the event, Mike H, Dan M and Chris P were all sponsored as part of their fundraising efforts for the 20th World Scout Jamboree.
