District Lightweight Camping Competition A report by Michael H

After winning the District Lightweight in 1999 and coming sixth in the County Lightweight the 7th Woking dream team had quite a tough reputation to live up to. We kept up the tradition and arrived at the start of this years competition 50 minutes early so when our time came to leave we were ready for anything and we left with no problems.

James Lee navigated and we were all familiar with the route so following the path was relatively easy. We arrived at the first checkpoint almost exactly on time and managed to do the same for the rest of the hike.

When we arrived at the campsite after 7 hours of walking we quickly got our tents up and had 40 minutes to cook our main meal. Although this should have given us plenty of time we soon found out that dinner was taking longer than expected. We ate dehydrated mince and pasta, although the pasta refused to cook. After eating our savory mince and our undercooked pasta we checked our route card and climbed into our sleeping bags.

Saturday morning fever! The dream team get ready to win.

Following a night in the freezing cold, -3 to be exact, we crawled out of bed at 7.00, having lost an hours sleep with the clocks turning back. After breakfast we were weighed (clearly some had eaten more than others!) before setting off for the second days walking which turned out to be just as successful as the first.

The dream team consisted of Barry F, me (Michael H), James L and Daniel M. I would like to thank them all for their hard work and effort which they put into the weekend.

See you at the finish!

I would also like to congratulate the 7th Woking B team, made up of Chris H, Ian H, Danny L and Robert N who were competing for the first time as a team. They too enjoyed a very successful weekend.

In total 11 teams competed. On our return the results were published as follows:

1st - 7th Woking A team (the dream team) with 624 points

2nd - 8th Woking with 621 points

3rd - 7th Woking B team with 576 points

4th - Knaphill with 570 points

The result means that we shall again represent Woking District in the County competition and has given the B team the experience to follow on again next year.
