Chief Scout Award - Mountain Biking Presentation

How we created these pages...

These pages have been designed and created by three of the patrol leaders from 7th Woking Scout Troop.

To create these pages we had to try different software and programs as well as learn how to scan our photos and edit images. This page explains how we created our presentation.

Having had our photos developed we had to scan them onto the computer and we did this using a program called Vistascan (supplied with the Umax scanner we used). This was a long process as we had to choose which of the hundreds of photos we should use.

Some of the photos were slightly blurred or too dark so they had to be edited. We used several programs to do some really fine adjustments, including Corel Photo-paint 7 and Microsoft Photo Editor. We saved all our photos as JPEG files and optimized them to make the file sizes as small as possible (using a programme called JPEG Optimizer 2). This is very important as it speeds up the download time for anyone looking at our pages.

To display and explain our photos we then had to create this series of web pages. We started off with basic lessons in writing HTML and progressed onto using more specialist software, in particular Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft FrontPage. These programs write the html for you so all we had to do was design the pages.

To add a bit more interest we scanned and edited some images about mountain biking and saved these as GIF files. This allowed us to make the background transparent. We reduced the file sizes of these images using a programme called GIF Optimizer.

Finally, before we loaded these pages onto the internet we optimized the HTML using another programme called, yes you guessed it, HTML Optimizer. The whole process took us several days!
